The sale

The 12.03-carat Blue Moon diamond sold at Sotheby’s in November 2015 for approximately US$48.5 million. The Fancy Vivid Blue, Internally Flawless diamond was subsequently named the Blue Moon of Josephine.

The fascination

A singular name makes an auction story easier to remember, but the gemological description anchors it. Weight, color and clarity provide a vocabulary for understanding why a stone attracted attention.

Keep the context

This is a completed historical sale. It does not indicate that the diamond is currently available, or that another blue diamond of similar weight would command the same result.
