The sale

On 4 April 2017, the 59.60-carat CTF Pink Star sold at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong for approximately US$71.2 million. The buyer, Chow Tai Fook, gave the diamond its present name. The oval mixed-cut stone was graded Fancy Vivid Pink and Internally Flawless.

Why it matters

Size alone does not tell this story. The combination of substantial weight, vivid natural pink color and exceptional clarity made this a landmark auction event. Its reported sale price is a historical result, rather than an appraisal of what the diamond would sell for today.

A collector’s perspective

Read the sale date alongside the number. Currency conversion, auction terms and the circumstances of a particular bidding room belong to that moment. One spectacular sale cannot set the price of every pink diamond.
