Origin is an essential distinction
Natural diamonds form in the earth; laboratory-grown diamonds are made using controlled technological processes. Laboratory-grown diamonds have closely comparable physical and optical properties. Appearance alone is not a reliable way for an untrained buyer to establish origin.
Ask for clear disclosure
Before buying, request written confirmation of whether the stone is natural or laboratory-grown and whether any treatments have been applied. Review the accompanying report and the seller’s return policy. A vague phrase such as “real diamond” does not answer the origin question.
Choose for your purpose
A gift, an engagement ring and a historical collection may reflect different priorities. Decide which matters most: provenance, appearance, design, budget or a combination. Avoid relying on promises of appreciation, and ask what any buyback policy actually guarantees.
Keep the decision personal
There is no single answer for every wearer. A transparent description and a well-made piece are more useful than a sales pitch that obscures the facts. Compare individual stones and settings on their own merits.
