From India to France

The Louvre traces the Regent’s discovery to India in 1698. After being cut in England, it was acquired in 1717 at the request of Philippe d’Orléans, Regent of France.

A jewel in a public collection

The stone belonged to the French Crown Diamonds collection and was assigned to the Louvre in 1887. Its cushion form and historic cutting style give visitors a way to connect gem craftsmanship with the history of royal collecting.

A museum photograph offers a different pleasure from a sales image: it records the actual object in a documented collection. We present the Regent as a historical treasure, without suggesting it is offered for purchase or attaching an unsupported modern value.
